So I planned out a span of a year’s quarter including buffer weeks and a subsequent week of rest the 13th week.īelow that I put columns for each day of the 12 weeks similar to a 7-day calendar view, but just for 12 x 7 = 84 days. It loosely followed the “12 week year” idea. This is also were I set the general parameters like how much time I have to devote to the projects per week and how many weekdays there are accounting for holidays and vacation. In sheet one I used a script to pull in data from all those individual project sheets in the top half. 0% = white, then gradually from red over yellow to green and if the task was 100% done it additionally got crossed out. I also had a column to enter the estimation of the task’s fulfillment in percent and I color coded the task’s rows accordingly. In the first rows, the header of each sheet’s columns, I did time and progress calculations, mostly summing up the diifferent numerical values for progress or durations. Buffers and uncertain tasks were also added in advance based on previous experience from similar projects. Each sheet had a column for tasks and one for a rough estimation of how long each task would take. I created a new sheet in the document for every project. I’ve used Google Sheets for that in the past. Where most tools fall short is being able to do some basic form of calculations to sum up how much time in total is budgeted, spent and what the progress is. I know from my own consulting practice that planning my time and commitments beyond that time is forgetting that time demands coming from clients will make any longer-term plans unreliable. It’s all a matter of training yourself to spend time each week looking out over a planning horizon of 4 to 6 weeks. I wouldn’t waste the effort to shoehorn time budgeting into software – you know your work and you know the gotchas. This is an exercise you can do on paper, or in Excel / Numbers. This kind of scenario playing at the high level can give you an idea of when you can slot commitments into your work plan.Īt that point, you need to come down from the 10,000 foot level and spend time with the calendar. In that scenario – you have no time for a new project to complete, but if you slide the four week horizon forward to looking at the four weeks starting in two weeks, you might. Overhead tasks (time accounting, billing, etc.): 20 hrs Required tasks (get this info from OmniFocus estimated durations): 180 hrs Available work hours 240 (freelancers never work 40 hr weeks) If you can get a rough handle on standard project budgets, then the 10,000 foot view is a matter of knowing: For the next four weeks: Standard Time Budget for "Editing Projects": 80 hrs I’m talking about developing a method where I can confidently tell a client that I can take their project on and deliver something to them anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months from the time I talk with them.Īre your projects similar enough that you can do standard time budgeting? E.g., Project Category: Editing Is there a method or tool out there that I haven’t found yet? How does everyone here solve this problem in their professional and person life? I’m talking about developing a method where I can confidently tell a client that I can take their project on and deliver something to them anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months from the time I talk with them. I enjoy time-blocking as much as possible, but that’s very much in the weeds and day-to-day stuff. They all haven’t really been super helpful, and require a lot of upkeep, it seems. I’ve messed around with timeline views in Notion, calendar groups in Fantastical where I only have project calendars, and use all-day events to indicate which projects I’m working on when, and few other various tools. I’d obviously like to fill as much time as reasonably possible to put food on the table, but I don’t want to pull all-nighters either. I have, however (and unsurprisingly), gotten myself into trouble in the past, and am wondering if there’s a better method out there to prevent future over- or under-committing my time. Usually I just kind of scan through my due dates in OmniFocus, do some terrible napkin math, then accept or decline the job depending on whether I think I’ve got the bandwidth to get it done on time and at a high level of quality. When considering new projects/clients, I need to take a good look at my calendar, see my general availability, and compare it to when the client wants their deliverable. I’m a freelance video editor and manage a lot of individual projects. I’ve been wrestling with this for a while now, and I can’t seem to figure out a good way to achieve what I’m wanting. Partners in Code Vein come in a variety of flavors, from the fast and nimble sword-user Louie to the ranged attacker Mia. There are also AI partners in Code Vein who accompany you into battle every step of the way, unlike the intermitten ghostly aid you could summon in a Souls game. There’s also a robust character customisation system that lets you really get into the grain on creating your own unique character, and you’re even allowed to switch up your looks whenever you want in the hub world. If you use Gifts often enough, you can even equip them on other Blood Codes in order to mix and match your toolset even further. Instead of being required to meticulously build your stats in a specific way or pay an outrageous fee to respec and try something new, simply pop in a new Blood Code and now you’ve replaced a Strength build with a Dexterity build. Passive gifts might boost your damage with bayonets or give you more health, while active abilities can be anything from strength buffs to poisonous projectiles or even flashy blade-dancing attacks.īlood Codes are great because, in essence, they make character builds and stat-growth accessible to any level of player. Blood Codes also come with a set of unique passive and active abilities called Gifts. Instead, you’ll change these stats using Blood Codes, equippable power sets that you obtain throughout the game from fallen warriors or generous comrades.Įach Blood Code completely alters the spread of your stats, with one favoring higher Dexterity and Stamina while another gives you better Strength but much lower base Health. You spend these at mistles to level up and increase your health and damage, but you won’t be spending stat points to boost familiar parameters like Dexterity or Willpower. Take, for example, the currency of Haze that I just mentioned. While the meat of the game carries many of the same characteristics that are sure to please fans of From Software games, many things in Code Vein also diverge from those games in truly interesting ways. The familiarity of Code Vein is enticing, but also slightly dishonest. Killing enemies rewards you with a currency called Haze, but dying will leave your Haze in a puddle at your location of death in order for you to try and recover before dying again. Your checkpoints are flower mistles scattered sparsely throughout each level, with death sending you back to the last one you touched. You’ll strafe and roll around your opponents with the same poise as a Souls character, even wielding some weapons that include giant hammers and two handed spears in almost identical stances. In many aspects of the core gameplay, that DNA remains very much untouched. Announced back in 2017 and shown off as a slow and deliberate action game, it was hit with over a year of delays as the team tried to turn Code Vein into something more than just Dark Souls with anime girls. While perhaps a bit late to the party, the team at Bandai Namco normally known for their equally derivative Monster Hunter-inspired series God Eater took their time getting Code Vein out of the door. Yes, Code Vein is a game in the style of the iconic From Software series of brutal action-RPGs. As Code Vein slowly began to sink its teeth into me, I began to eagerly dedicate dozens more hours to one of the most inventive, yet unrefined takes on the Souls genre to date. It was hard to see this through the opening hours of Code Vein, but as my time with the game went on, the things that initially off-put and upset me were quickly cast aside. Despite clunky game mechanics and an exhaustingly melodramatic story, the latest game from Bandai Namco Studios has something special at the center of it. I wanted to put down the controller.Īnd yet, I didn’t. I’ve also just encountered a boss fight that was book-ended by sappy, poorly acted cutscenes that tried desperately to make me care for the creature I had just murdered. I’ve rolled through enemy attacks only to take damage, I’ve been caught in tight corridors with multiple enemies and a camera that refused to cooperate, I’ve failed to initiative a backstab attack and lost a chunk of health because I was a centimetre off from the incredibly precise backstabbing location behind the enemy. Just two hours into Code Vein, I was feeling confused and a little disappointed. So she looks slightly ridiculous as well as sounding it.Īnd the very first time we hear her speak:īright and bubbly as ever, Effie Trinket trots to the podium and gives her signature, "Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!" Her pink hair must be a wig because her curls have shifted slightly off-center since her encounter with Haymitch. We haven't even met her yet, but already our impression of her is of a slightly ridiculous person, "maniacally upbeat" and "affected" with a voice that makes anything sound funny.Įffie Trinket, District 12's escort, fresh from the Capitol with her scary white grin, pinkish hair, and spring green suit. Besides, the Capitol accent is so affected, almost anything sounds funny in it. We have to joke about it because the alternative is to be scared out of your wits. "And may the odds - " " - be ever in your favor!" I finish with equal verve. "I almost forgot! Happy Hunger Games!" He plucks a few blackberriesįrom the bushes around us. Suddenly he falls into a Capitol accent as he mimics Effie Trinket, the maniacally upbeat woman who arrives once a year to read out the names at the leaping. Here's the very first time we hear about her: Let's compare that impression with how Effie is depicted in the books. The term trinket itself is slightly derogatory - it refers to a thing that's almost worthless, but presumably it has some worth to its owner - and therefore by extension suggests that the owner is superficial to care about it. I tend to think of the word trinket as suggesting not only small size and low value, but a small-minded owner, one who obsesses over possessions and ascribes them more value than they really have: the sort of person to whom the phrase "little things please little minds" is ideally suited. Based on the happenings of a real-life gang, ‘the Birmingham Boys’, the show explores the events after world war one, including the infamous Wall Street Crash of 1929. How to wear a pocket watch in true 1920’s styleĪs previously mentioned, Peaky Blinders is a hugely popular UK television program set in the 1920’s Birmingham. Plus, commissioning one-off pieces are not unheard of, and with the rise in popularity of the trend once again, it’s really up to you to decide just how far to take it. Nowadays, you can find both open pocket watches (without a metal covering over the watch face), and more traditional styles of pocket watches, equipped with a chain and all the trimmings. Due to the fast pace of war, men required a quicker, more convenient method of telling the time, thus, wristwatches saw their popularity spike as pocket watches became inconvenient. Unfortunately, pocket watches went largely out of fashion in the 20th Century during both world wars, since they no longer fit the needs of their target buyers. Accordingly, this caused the adoption of much more stringent standards for pocket watch use across the US railroading industry, including the introduction of the General Railroad Timepiece Standards in 1893. There have previously been problems with the synchronicity of pocket watches when a famous train wreck occurred in 1891 due to an engineer’s pocket watch stopping for 4 minutes. Eventually, however, designs became slimmer and higher quality, and pocket watches found homes in specially-crafted pockets of gentlemen’s jackets. Originally, pocket watches were worn as pendants around the neck of their owner, although these were both chunky and ill-protected, as they lacked a glass casing over the watch face. Gold and silver pocket watches indicated their owners were among the highest classes, while the less wealthy tend to own a brass pocket watch. These materials gave a good insight into the wealth of their owners. Having said that, poorer folk weren’t completely excluded, but their pocket watches were simply made from much cheaper, more common materials. Therefore, pocket watches were worn as a status symbol. Thought to have been first invented in the 16th Century, pocket watches were originally created for gentlemen to display their wealth, as well as integrate a portable clock into men’s fashion. In fact, I later found out that a call had been placed just a little more than a half an hour before my own. It wasn’t the first call they had had that day about my account. Unsure of exactly what was happening, I unplugged my router and cable modem, turned off the Mac Mini we use as an entertainment center, grabbed my wife’s phone, and called AppleCare, the company’s tech support service, and spoke with a rep for the next hour and a half. For the first time it occurred to me that I was being hacked. Then the screen went gray, and asked for a four-digit PIN.īy now, I knew something was very, very wrong. When I opened my laptop, an iCal message popped up telling me that my Gmail account information was wrong. I went to connect the iPhone to my computer and restore from that backup - which I had just happened to do the other day. I entered my iCloud login to restore, and it wasn’t accepted. I just assumed it would be a pain in the ass, and nothing more. And, my phone automatically backs up every night. This was irritating, but I wasn’t concerned. Had I been regularly backing up the data on my MacBook, I wouldn't have had to worry about losing more than a year’s worth of photos, covering the entire lifespan of my daughter, or documents and e-mails that I had stored in no other location. Had I used two-factor authentication for my Google account, it’s possible that none of this would have happened, because their ultimate goal was always to take over my Twitter account and wreak havoc. Getting into Amazon let my hackers get into my Apple ID account, which helped them get into Gmail, which gave them access to Twitter. And worst of all, my AppleID account was broken into, and my hackers used it to remotely erase all of the data on my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. Next my Twitter account was compromised, and used as a platform to broadcast racist and homophobic messages. First my Google account was taken over, then deleted. In the space of one hour, my entire digital life was destroyed. RecyclerView makes it easy to efficiently display large sets of data.
